In the run-up to the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro / Brazil in November , the science academies of the G20 countries have published a joint statement . Under the title “ Science for Global Transformation ” they recommend specific measures for contributing to the achievement of UN sustainability goals . The recommendations include the topics of artificial intelligence , the bioeconomy , energy system transformation , health and social justice .
For the first time , the joint statement of the G20 academies highlights the importance of a global carbon CO2 price as a central instrument for reducing emissions and emphasises the necessity of low-emission energy sources for a sustainable energy system . The potential of using artificial intelligence is also discussed and the bioeconomy is considered a key way of combining economic growth and environmental protection . In the health sector , the science academies recommend an integrative “ One Health ” approach that takes a holistic view of the health of humans , animals and the environment . In addition to global access to vaccinations , the fight against antimicrobial resistance and greater consideration of mental health are also called for .
Following a kick-off conference in March 2024 , experts from the Leopoldina have been involved in the development of the joint statement under the leadership of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences . President Gerald Haug ML led the final votes for the Leopoldina at the “ Science20 Summit Assembly ” in Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of July .
The Science20 process , under the Brazilian G20 presidency , is already the eighth occasion that the science academies have actively participated in the G20 process . The G20 policy advice was launched in 2017 under the German G20 presidency and the leadership of the Leopoldina .
