Leopoldina President Bettina Rockenbach at the Science7 Summit in Canada
The President of the Leopoldina, Bettina Rockenbach ML, completed the first foreign visit of her office term from 6 to 8 May. In Ottawa / Canada she took part in this year’ s Science7 Summit – the main scientific support for the G7 Summit. The Royal Society of Canada hosted the summit. The Academies of the G7 countries handed over their jointly drafted recommendations to the Canadian government currently holding the G7 presidency.

President Bettina Rockenbach ML represented the Leopoldina on the panel“ Advanced Technologies and Data Security”. Here she discussed the regulation of AI applications and responsible data handling with international colleagues.

In addition to the public programme the G7 academies met with Mona Nemer, Chief Science Advisor of the Canadian Government, to talk about the role of independent scientific advice. The French Ambassador to Canada also invited the participants to a reception. France will take over the G7 presidency in 2026.

enbach used her stay in Canada for political conversations. She met the German Ambassador to Canada, Matthias Lüttenberg, as well as representatives of Canadian science policy and from universities. The topic of“ research security” was a particular focus of the conversation.
The G7 Summit of the heads of state and government took place from
15 to 17 June in Kananaskis( province of Alberta). The national academies of the G7 countries have been providing their scientific perspective to the political advice of the G7 for 20 years – independently and and in an evidence- based manner.

THOMAS STOCKER IS A NEW MEMBER OF THE LEOPOLDINA PRESIDIUM
The Senate of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina has elected Thomas Stocker ML to the Presidium. On 1 May 2025, the Swiss geoscientist and climate physicist succeeded the chemist Martin Quack ML who was member of the board since 2014 and has left after completing two terms of office.
Thomas Stocker develops climate models to simulate climate change over the last two million years and to forecast future climate changes. From 2008 to 2015 Stocker was the co-chairperson of Working Group 1“ The Physical Science Basis” of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change( IPCC). The report that was signed off in September 2013 during his time as chairperson laid the scientific foundation for the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. Stocker, who has researched in London / UK, Montreal / Canada, New York City / USA, Boulder / USA and Honolulu in Hawaii / USA, and was Professor at the University of Bern / Switzerland from 1993 to 2024 was elected to the Leopoldina section Earth Sciences in 2019.
